When i look at this photograph i see a boy full of energy, excitement and a love for all things with wheels ! In 1970 at the age of 5 I was lucky enough to own this great, now iconic , battery powered Team Lotus Ford racing car. The Lotus racing car was a much loved present and i can remember feeling very independent moving around by myself . I very quickly learnt how to take corners at speed and avoid scraping my shins climbing in and out of the seat. At this time i was surrounded by motor sports from trials such as the "Scottish" where we would follow Dad as he competed to the muddy scramble tracks throughout rural England.
The photograph is evocative of my child hood in the early 70s , the leather Tub Chair was where i spent rainy afternoons spinning around in it like some fair ground ride ( much to the adults distain ! ) The sideboard will bring back memories for many families as nearly every house i went to had a Teak Sideboard of some description with precious items displayed on the top. I can see a photograph of Mum and Dad on their wedding day, Mum always remembered how windy it was as they stood outside the church for their photographs to be taken . These early days are referred to as your " formative years " and mine were already filled with motorbikes and motor cars . Weekends watching Dad competing , sitting track side at the race tracks and of course the excitement of the crossings to the Isle of Man to watch the fabulous TT. It was only going one way ! Where did it start for you ?
