1968 Morris 1800 " Land Crab"
1968 Morris 1800 S "Land Crab" , The S was introduced in May 1968 The 1800 S models were factory tuned by Downton engineering who, seemingly at the time, owned the COOPER trade name. Originally BMC had planned to tune the standard 1800 with Downton Big Valve High compression head, sports camshaft, twin 1.5" SU carbs, Three branch Downton exhaust manifold with freeflow exhaust, revised ign timing. bigger front brakes with 3 pot callipers all this was carried out by Downtons. The plan was then to badge it Morris 1800 Cooper S however, there was some form of dispute over the Cooper trade name with Downton, leading to it not being used ( so just badged Morris 1800 S) shortly after BMC broke off ties with Downton and presumably that was when BMC Special Tuning Dep was created.
This car still retains the original Downton head, cam, exhaust, brakes etc It has now been upgraded with a new 45 DCO Webber carb fitted to a Mangoletsi inlet manifold plus Mangoletsi throttle linkage.New electronic high output fuel pump, new pre pump fuel filter, new Filter King pree carb filter and pressure regulator with replaceable filters. Fitted new one off Downton badged finned alloy rocker cover, Complete new sparkright transistor distributor ( not just a points replacement kit) new sparkright plug leads and high output coil, champion plug caps, new HD alternator with new alternator conversion mounts, original dynamo control box replaced on bulkhead with an extra fuse box for spot lamps etc, new high torque starter motor, new solenoid, engine and fittings repainted.New thermostat and gasket, new oil temp oil pressure and oil temp gauges fitted with sender fitted to special manifold, new stainless head nuts, fitted new oil cooler kit. New oil and filter , Front grill modified to make it quick release. Fitted 3 new Hella spot lamps pre wired into engine bay , New Motolita wood rim on custom made boss, alloy gear knob, .New gen Minilight wheels with Falken tires. New Lucas rally reverse spot lamp , Full new carpet set ( not fitted they are in the boot) probably more that I have forgotten,
The Back ground of this Morris 1800 S is it was registered new on Guernsey on the 31/12/1968 and remained on the Island until 2006 when it joined its 3rd owner in Hampshire , The 1800 changed hands in 2009 and latterly in 2017 . A documented mileage of 65,000 miles in round figures is recorded in the paper work and upon the odometer . Presented today in excellent condition and other than a repaint a number of years ago the Morris 1800 appears to be in superb condition , Exceptional un welded underside , With its super smooth suspension , Light and direct steering , Positive brakes and performance it is a joy to drive , Also January 2021 The Morris had a New Brake master cylinder , New clutch , New clutch master cylinder and MGC slave cylinder .
